"You have to hold your breath when you are riding in a car going through a tunnel. If everyone breathed at the same time the tunnel would collapse. And then, if you make it through the tunnel, make a wish, and your wish will come true." This superstition has been documented in dozens of cities in Northern and Southern California, including, interestingly, ones with no tunnels. Our folklorists always add a bit of context and interpretation along with their collections. A 21 year old folklorist writes, "It's based on some poorly applied principles of physics, namely that a vacuum causes hollow objects to collapse, but this fails to take into account there is no vacuum created by inhaling air in a tunnel with open ends. I am certain Julia understands that the logic is faulty at best, as she has taken physics and attends the University of California at Berkeley." 21 year old folklorist Mary's beef with Julia, her 18 year old informant, on file at the UC Berkeley Folklore Archive since 1997. We don't encourage judging informants as part of the research process, but we can learn a lot about this collector's faith in the scientific method.
